Every May 16 we celebrate International Biotechnology Day, a date that invites us to recognise the impact this discipline has on health, food, the environment, industry and people’s quality of life.
At the Ciencia & Vida Basal Center (FCV-USS), biotechnology is an essential part of our history and our mission, and one of the institution’s five key pillars. From basic research to the development of applied solutions, our work seeks to turn scientific knowledge into innovation with real impact.
But for that path to happen, producing excellent science is not enough. It also takes an ecosystem able to connect laboratories, technological capabilities, entrepreneurship, advanced training, public–private collaboration and knowledge transfer.
That is why having a biotechnology park within its own ecosystem is strategic for our Center.
The Science and Technology Park of Centro Ciencia & Vida (FCV-USS) allows science- and technology-based companies to work side by side every day with researchers, students, experimental platforms and national and international collaboration networks. This proximity creates a unique environment: one where scientific questions can engage with productive and social challenges; where an idea born in the laboratory can move towards a prototype, a service, a company or a concrete solution; and where biotechnology is understood not only as research but also as a driver of development.
Having this Park within the Basal Center’s ecosystem strengthens our ability to link science and innovation. It speeds up technology transfer, opens opportunities for collaboration with industry, trains new generations with an entrepreneurial outlook and projects the knowledge generated in Chile towards new markets and applications.
This space brings together diverse capabilities, from biomedical research, molecular biology, microbiology, diagnostics, technology development and specialised services to start-ups that seek to address complex challenges through science.
This integration is especially relevant in a country like Chile, which needs to diversify its productive base, strengthen its scientific and technological sovereignty and generate solutions from its own local capabilities.
On International Biotechnology Day we reaffirm our commitment to science connected with society, able to create value, drive innovation and contribute to the country’s development.
Because at Centro Ciencia & Vida we believe that biotechnology is not just a promise for the future but a concrete tool to transform the present, and having a Biotechnology Park within our ecosystem allows us to move precisely in that direction: from basic science to solutions that make a difference in people’s lives.
