Profile
Cells continually degrade molecules and organelles, processes that are increased in response to stress conditions as a survival mechanism. Autophagy is one of these processes characterized by depending on the degradative function of lysosomes, membranous organelles rich in acidic hydrolases. Lysosomes degrade molecules and organelles that are detected and captured by “sub-cellular sentinels” called autophagosomes (macroautophagy) and multivesicular bodies (microautophagy) Autophagy is also closely interconnected with the function of the proteasome and ERAD pathway at the endoplasmic reticulum, processes dependent on the ubiquitin molecule. Our group studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms of these degradative processes in an integrative manner, incorporating different stressful scenarios such as chronic inflammation, hypoxia and chemotherapeutic drugs. In this context, we study the role of HERPUD1, Galectin-3 and Amyloid Precursor Protein, applying a basic and clinical approach.
