Soledad Matus, Ph.D., joins Fundación Ciencia & Vida

17/03/2017

Fundación Ciencia & Vida is pleased to welcome Soledad Matus as Head of the Laboratory of Biology of Neurodegeneration.

A graduate in Biochemistry, Dr. Matus earned her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from P. Universidad Católica de Chile. She completed her Postdoctoral training on the effect of cellular stress responses on the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) under the mentorship of Dr. Claudio Hetz at Universidad de Chile and the Neurounion Biomedical Foundation associated with the Biomedical Neuroscience Institute and the FONDAP Project Geroscience Center for Brain Health and Metabolism. Dr. Matus currently leads the Laboratory of Biology of Neurodegeneration at Fundación where she studies the mechanisms of aging and the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, life expectancy in developed countries was about forty years. Today, in many countries it is over eighty, and Chile is not far behind. Dr. Matus studies how the adaptive mechanisms present in our cells are activated in response to stress stimuli and how they contribute to neurodegeneration and aging. Using different research models, Dr. Matus and her team evaluate the consequences of regulating the multiple components of this response to develop new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

We congratulate Dr. Matus on her appointment and welcome her to Fundación Ciencia & Vida.
