A great 2009 start for Fundación Ciencia para la Vida: three new Fondecyt projects were awarded to Fundación investigators
22/01/2009The Chilean Commision for Science and Technolgy Research (CONICYT), has awarded FONDECYT grants to three Fundación investigators, to support their research efforts. Doctors David Holmes (genome biology of bioleaching extremophiles), Alejandra Loyola and Rodrigo Pacheco (both in biomedical research), were selected among the few beneficiaries of these prestigious grants.
Dr. Holmes submitted the project “Application of Bioinformatics and Comparative Genomics to Investigate the Ecophysiology of Bioleaching Microorganisms” in order to carry out fundamental biological research into bioleaching microorganisms and to capture knowledge that can be applied to industrial copper recovery.
In the Biomedicine field, Dr. Alejandra Loyola got funding for her project “Characterization of the non-nucleosomal histone H3.1 and H3.3 post-translational modification patterns”, which aims to investigate the role of the non-nucleosomal H3 post-translational modification patterns in the regulation of gene expression.
On the other hand, Dr. Rodrigo Pacheco was awarded funding for the project “Role of dopamine receptors on the T-cell mediated immunity”, which aims to unveil the pathophysiology of certain neurological diseases and illnesses that involve an imbalance in the immune response as in autoimmunity, immunodeficiency and cancer.
